Repair of some rust areas, and Modifications - Page 3
I was happy with the flare mock-up, so it was time to fit the front and rear bumpers. But before I did a little customizing and added a few cooling slots.
At front where there will be an additional oil cooler at the right side.
The rear bumper got also some opening for the heat to escape.
I also closed the cut-outs where the left and right exhaust pipe came out. There will be a different system going in, which still need to be determined.
Time to make a mess with fiber glass for the molds.
Next to make the actual flares.
Once I got the flares done, it was time to remove the mock-up from the car.
Getting the car ready to test fit the new flares.
Here temporarily mounted with sheet metal screws.
Now test fitting the bumpers and making adjustments as needed.
Also test fitting the T-bar hole covers.
I had to do some little changes on the front corners. I did not like how they lined up.
Next to test fit all the front pieces.
I decided to upgrade the electrical system, and will use the later type fuse box, so I have more space for relays, etc.
So the original Fuse box mount and relay holder comes out.
I also added the RSR strut bar mount.
Another thing I didn't like was the transmission tunnel. When you retrofit a 915 transmission in a 71 911, you need a little more space for the transmission. So when I did this about 10 years ago. I just used the BFH to make some space. Now, that I rebuilding the 71, I decided to cut out the old transmission tunnel and make a new section and weld in in. Here are some pictures of the progress.
Now it was time to get the fiber glass roof skin bonded.
This time the car will get rear 911R style lights. I had to modify the inserts to make sure the fit right. I also installed studs, so there will no screws visible from the outside.
